Yoga has historically always been associated with the eastern world, but the recent rise of its popularity in the West means that many amazing teachers and yoga schools have opened up in Europe.

You’ve decided to take your yoga practice to the next level by becoming a yoga instructor! The flurry of excitement you feel is exhilarating, but when it comes down to the admin side of things, your insides turn to a twist. Deciding where to go for your 200-hour yoga instructor training is difficult, and the temptation to imagine yourself on an exotic, eastern island can be overpowering.

For this reason, in this article, we break down 5 reasons why you should ditch Bali and India, and do your yoga teacher training in Europe!

1. Yoga teacher training in Europe gives you value for your money

When you commit to investing in a 200 hour yoga instructor training, you need to decide where you want your money to go. Whilst paying for high quality teaching is the main priority, the location of the course shouldn’t be.

You don’t want to be paying more for your airplane ticket to Bali than for your extremely talented, inspiring and overqualified teachers. This is the first thing you should invest in so that you can be confident that you made the most out of your training.

Flights within Europe tend to cost at least a quarter less than any flight departing from Europe and landing in the South East. By choosing to do your yoga instructor training in Europe, you’ll be saving a lot of money on travel, which will significantly reduce the total cost of the entire journey.

An added advantage is that you might find that you have more money to spend on learning materials, the quality of accommodation (which is way better in Europe by the way) and any other factors which will certainly contribute to your performance on the training course!

2. Who will be your yoga teachers if you study in Europe

Arguably the most important factor to take into consideration when deciding where to go for your teacher training is the teachers. Your time on the course will be grueling, physically exhausting and emotionally challenging. By contrast, your teachers should be experienced, inspiring, and supportive. With a team of such teachers, you will feel enriched, encouraged, and engaged. Make sure to research the teachers on the course and be wary of the common myth that the best yoga teachers are Indian or teach in India.

In fact, even those attending yoga instructor training in India and Bali are usually trained by European teachers. Most, if not all, reputable teachers that specialize in training students to become yoga instructors in Europe have spent a large amount of their training in India, and often teach in both western and the eastern hemisphere. Long story short…you are not compromising at all on the experience and level of your teachers by choosing to do your yoga instructor training in Europe.

3. COVID-19, safety, and travel restrictions in Europe

Training to become a yoga teacher in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic can be difficult, but it doesn’t have to be limiting. Besides the online course option that most schools offer, you will also find that many courses usually held in more remote locations have been temporarily discontinued. Don’t let that stop you from progressing on your yoga journey! If you are based in Europe, it makes sense under the current climate, to remain within your continent. Not only will you limit the possibility of coming into contact with different strains of the COVID-19 virus, but you will also most likely have more immediate access to a high-quality hospital, without needing to fuss around with too much paperwork.

And you don't want to end up in a hospital in India, been there, done that and it's not recommended.

As 200 hour yoga teacher training courses tend to mainly attract young women, many of whom might be traveling abroad for the first time, consider that European countries such as Greece and Spain are often ranked far safer for solo travel than countries such as India. This means that you will feel super secure and comfortable.

4. Localized yoga network

An amazing advantage to staying in Europe for your yoga instructor training is that you are able to create a close, tightly knit, and above all, localized yoga network. After all, the chances that you will meet someone from the same country, even city as you, are much greater if you train in your own continent. This will mean that when your career as a yoga teacher begins, you will be able to depend on a friendly support network of yogis around Europe, for advice, tips and tricks and even a couch to sleep on. Remember that making friends around Europe is a beautiful thing, if for no other reason than to give you the excuse to visit them without having to travel too far! You will have a community of yogis super close to you.

5. You don’t need to go far to go deep within…

The final, and most important reason why you should consider doing your yoga instructor course in Europe is because becoming a yoga instructor is an internal journey rather than a geographical one. Whilst it is helpful for your mind and body to be in a physically different space, every one of our students will tell you that becoming a yoga instructor comes from within. It doesn’t matter whether you can hold a handstand and it certainly doesn’t matter whether you are in Greece or Bombay, the yoga teacher training experience is a personal journey that has nothing to do with the remoteness of your location, or the exotic surroundings.

For this reason, you will get the most out of your yoga experience if you stay in Europe and prioritize the quality of teaching, the comfort of accommodation, and travel logistics over remoteness of location. Remember, you don’t have to go far to go deep within.

Much love and light,
